One of our favorite races that we sailed in last year — the Shipwrights’ Regatta — is set to once again kick off the sailboat racing season in Port Townsend on February 27. Last year’s event saw blue skies and brisk northerly winds, lots of smiles on the racecourse and tons of fun at the afterparty. (Read last year’s race report here.)
Three Sheets will be there racing again this year and we encourage sailors of all skill levels to come out and join us. This beloved regional tradition is celebrating its 25th year and promises to be a great event.
This year we look back and celebrate 25 years of winter sailing, in snow and sleet, gale force to flat calm — Port Townsend Bay has seen it all. Highly regarded as a fun, friendly regatta the Shipwrights’ is again sponsored by The Northwest Maritime Center (NWMC), Wooden Boat Foundation (WBF), Port Townsend Sailing Association (PTSA) and Edensaw Woods. Boats of all construction and crews of all skill levels are welcome. And as always, the race is open to folks who would like to try sailboat racing but do not have a boat. Non-boat owners are encouraged to show up at the Skipper’s Meeting and be connected with skippers looking for crew.
Registration forms are currently available at the Chandlery located at the NWMC at 431 Water Street as well as on-line at www.nwmaritime.org/SR ($20 before February 20, $25 after February 20). Last-minute registrations will be accepted between 8 and 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, and the Skippers’ Meeting will follow at 9 a.m.
The Skippers’ Meeting will be held upstairs at the NWMC with coffee provided by Sunrise Coffee. The race starts at noon on Port Townsend Bay. An awards ceremony will be held at approximately 4 p.m. upstairs at the NWMC. Beer and snacks will be provided as well as the usual perpetual awards, laughter and camaraderie. A free haul-out will be awarded to two lucky sailors courtesy of Sea Marine and the Port of Port Townsend.
